Here’s a photo tour of this weekend’s 9th Annual Billetproof Michigan show at Milan Dragway. Some great cars turned out—check ‘em out.
Billetproof Michigan is an evolving show in an evolving segment of the hot rod scene. Now in its ninth year, the event began at the Davisburg, Michigan fairgrounds, moved to Riverside Park in Ypsilanti for a few years, and this year has a new home at Milan Dragway, held in conjunction with the Detroit Dragway Reunion. (MCG has split the events into two separate features for greater coverage.)
When the Billetproof thing first launched, it was part and parcel with the original rat rod movement, a scene that has changed considerably since it began. You could say it’s grown up. The term “rat rod” itself is now in disfavor as builders have focused on a more authentic traditional look and roadworthy build quality. You may even spot some billet work here and there. Some of MCG’s favorites at the show:
+ Jocko McNeil’s fenderless but mostly stock 1931 Ford Model A closed pickup, with real Ford banger power.
+ Jason Pourick’s Washington Blue ’29 Ford roadster, featuring a tonneau cover and a killer dry lakes stance
+ The drop-dead gorgeous ’40 Ford Convertible of Terry Roberts (above), simply a sweetheart in every way.
